COVID-19 lockdown was opportunity to be more creative –Kenny Blaq

Popular comedian, Kehinde Otolorin, aka Kenny Blaq, has said that the lockdown declared to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 afforded entertainers like him the opportunity to explore other ways of channelling their creativity.

He told Sunday Scoop, “One of the major disadvantages of the COVID-19 pandemic was that we (comedians) were not able to work, and funds were hard to get. I was on tour before the lockdown was declared. Also, I had invested in a project (shortly before then). When one invests in a project, one would have the hope that before one gets to the middle or end of the project, one would have made one’s profit. Even if one does not profit, at least, one should make back the money invested in. However, it didn’t happen. The project did not even get half-way. It was terrible but we survived.

“On the other hand, some of the advantages (of the lockdown) were that it gave us time to bond with our families, and look for other ways to be creative. Some people have the impression that one cannot be creative at home (but, that’s not so). I wrote a full comedy special in my room during the lockdown.”

Blaq also maintained that he only made skits to promote his comedy shows and did not consider himself to be a ‘skit maker.’ He said, “I am not a skit maker. But, that does not mean I don’t know how to do skits. We all have our niche and the places where we triumph more. Stand-up comedy is different from music comedy, and that is also distinct from skit making. Comedy skits are things I do to promote my shows, not something I do on a regular basis. I don’t like to be distracted by a lot of things.

“I do skits once in a while, especially when other people want to feature me. When one starts something and people begin to like that thing, even if one does not have enough resources to carry it out, one has to be consistent in it. I am not a skit maker but a comedian who can do skits whenever I feel like doing them. That is the same way a skit maker might not be able to do stand-up comedy. The industry is beginning to recognise different genres of comedy, such as skit making, stand-up and poetic comedy. One cannot do everything.”
