Samuel Johnson reveals he's lost his sense of smell after his bike accident

Samuel Johnson has revealed he’s lost his sense of smell after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle in June.

The actor-turned-philanthropist, 43, explained on Sunday he had a ‘serrated nerve’.

‘I’ve been hit by a moving car and my smell is gone. It’s a serrated nerve and chances are my smell is gone forever. The nerve won’t grow back, is my point. But it seems the imagination is involved,’ he said in a lengthy post on Facebook.

Sharing a photo of himself happily sniffing a ‘smell test’, Samuel revealed he was taking in scents such as ‘eucalyptus’, ‘clove’, ‘rose’ and ‘lemon’ in the hope his sense of smell would return.

‘It’s a nine month-long test. It doesn’t work with the irresolute. I open my kit and there is everything I need, except for my time and imagination, which I bring with me…’ he continued.

‘If I use the test and my imagination is rampant enough, we will trick my body into thinking it can smell. The actual odour nerve is as bung as it gets, but my imagination could be all thwarty!’

In one gross admission, Samuel said he ‘did a Dutch Oven test’ – passing gas in bed before pulling the covers over your head – to test his smell.

‘I mustered up my most pungent offering. I inhaled deeply. I pretended I could smell, and I knew by my heat-scale that this was putrid. But I smelt nothing. I’ll never smell another fart again,’ he confessed.

Samuel added that while he can no longer ‘smell smells’, he can ‘detect smells’, after noticing the ‘air change’.

'I've been hit by a moving car and my smell is gone. It's a serrated nerve and chances are my smell is gone forever. The nerve won't grow back, is my point,' he said

‘I’m one month in and there’s many more months to go. But I love my smell test, because even though I can no longer detect odours, I’ve become obsessed with composition and imagination,’ he added.

The former Secret Life of Us star concluded: ‘At a time when odours mean nothing. I suppose we don’t really know what we’ve got until we’ve lost it.’

In another post on Facebook last Thursday, Samuel revealed he was ‘learning to read and write again’ after his accident.

‘Huge props to the gang at Ambulance Victoria, VicPol, The Alfred and The Epworth for putting this Humpty back together again.

‘Won’t bore you with all the medical stuffski, suffice to say I’ve been surrounded by a gang of experts, including the Occupational Therapist, who says it’s OK for me to go back to work on “light duties” today!’

At the time, Samuel revealed he was still recovering from the accident, and would have to wear his neck brace for another four weeks.

‘When you’ve been hit by a vehicle, little or otherwise, it can take a while to un-wonk yourself,’ he continued.

‘Full recovery is within my grasp, I’ve just got a lot more work ahead of me. I feel very lucky to be OK, but I’m worried about what cancer is getting away with whilst I am on the mend.’

Samuel started the cancer research charity, Love Your Sister, back in 2012 with his late sister, Connie, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2017.

The charity has so far raised over $13million for medical research into personalised cancer treatments for patients.

The Secret Life of Us star said he had ‘a date with a hydrotherapy pool’, before signing off his post with ‘Slightly Wobbly Unicyclist’.

‘I wish I didn’t have to tell you this. Early Saturday night Sam was on his way to visit family when he was accidentally hit by a car,’ she began.

‘Our Ambos got him picked up and tucked away safely in hospital in record time. I followed them in. The fantastical medical staff are in overdrive taking care of his sore head.

‘He’s awake and not too happy that he doesn’t have his pants – nobody loves a hospital gown. Hearing his voice is lovely, but can’t wait for hugs when it’s safe.’
