Trisha Goddard stated on Good Morning Britain that marital rape was considered ‘okay’ in the 1970s.

Appearing on the ITV show on Tuesday morning, Trisha, 64, discussed how marriage has changed ahead of her fourth wedding. 

Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley about the history of marriage, the TV star explained rape used to be considered ‘okay’ when it was a husband and wife fifty years ago.

Shock comments: Trisha Goddard stated on Good Morning Britain that marital rape was considered ‘okay’ in the 1970s 

‘Okay, so let’s look at what marriage really is, it was created as a way to bind women to men, financially and fiscally,’ she began.

‘The church didn’t get involved until the 12th century when the catholic (faith) needed to expand on fortunes and congregations so they gave blessing. 

‘Rape in marriage was okay in the 70s when you and I were youngsters, Richard, it was perfectly alright to rape your wife. 

‘A historian noted that marriage has changed more in the last 40 years than in the previous 5,000 years. And I actually think it’s a good discussion to have because marriage isn’t the same anymore.

‘Not everybody marries for romantic reasons, that’s only a relatively new thing that only started n the middle ages. And not all cultures marry for romantic reasons it’s often fiscal, for tribal survival.’

She added: ‘For people from slave stock like myself we were shackled, we were goods and we were used. I think marriage and the nature of union has changed and will keep changing.

‘None of us go into marriage thinking it’s just for the week or the month or the year. We all want it to last forever, and sadly that’s not always the case.’

Trisha admitted in the interview that she ‘never ever’ thought she would get married again following three divorces, as she gears up to say her vows once more.

It comes after she showed off her new engagement ring while revealing her mystery boyfriend had proposed to her during a hiking trip.

Showing off her sense of humour, the talk show host admitted: ‘Because of my age, this probably is the final time. I’ve come a long way. This is my first marriage this century. 

Trisha previously claimed her second husband Mark Grieve was unfaithful while their daughter Madison, now 29, was fought for her life due to breathing problems following her birth. She also shares Billie, 32, with the Aussie TV producer.

She continued: ‘Having been through breast cancer, my “hashtag boo” is a widower. I was married for 22 years in my last marriage and, trust me, when someone cheats on you, you hang on and work and work until you can’t anymore.

‘I never ever thought I would get married again, but to find someone who has experience of life and death at my age is wonderful.’ 

The actress was left shocked after her mystery man, who she has known for four years, and has been living with in Connecticut since March last year, surprised her with an engagement ring as they took a snack during their New Year walk.

She grinned and excitedly showed off her new ring on a video, set to the soundtrack of Ce Ce Peniston track Finally and told fans: ‘So mid-hike, I thought #boo was breaking out the usual snack of almonds or mandarins or bottles of water…

‘Ummm… Man broke out #jewelz, It g’wan be Mrs @boo well soon… Been together 4 years… He makes me laugh, looks after me, is a kid with me …

‘I’m so frickin’ HAPPY with him, learned about de bomp-bomp with him…And before you ask, no…. I’m not pregnant!

Trisha who says her sex life has been amazing with her new man, also told her actress friend Karen Dotrice: ‘Girrrl.. you were the first person I trusted with the news that I met someone who truly meant something after all the sh** I’d been through…Someone who really truly meant so much to me.’

Trisha has so far kept the identity of her fiancé secret but says that ‘he’s four years older’ and that they met through a US friend.

She has said in the past that he is Jewish so understands racism, and that: ‘He’s amazing. He’s from Connecticut and we have a lot in common. He’s a widower and lost his wife to breast cancer, so now he’s a single dad.’

Trisha has been married three times before. Her first husband, Robert Nestdale, later came out as gay. and she went on to marry Mark in 1993.

She also split from her third husband Peter Gianfrancesco in 2017 after 20 years of marriage and divorced him in 2018.
