Award-winning Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has opened up on a painful chapter of his life, revealing how his parents abandoned him as an infant, leaving him in the care of his grandmother.
According to Dakolo, his parents, who were young at the time, abandoned him because they were unable to provide adequate care.
Detailing the circumstances of his abandonment, Dakolo said, “When they had me, they were like, ‘Let’s go and see your grandma.’ Then they dropped me with her and ran away because they were too young and didn’t know what to do with me.”
The musician expressed that his mother was likely not even 20 years old when he was born, while his father was in his early 20s.
Dakolo disclosed that his parents were childhood sweethearts, but their youth and lack of resources led them to make the heart-wrenching decision to leave him in the care of his grandmother.
The singer further revealed that his parents eventually separated, with his father returning to Ghana.
In his words;
“My parents, I don’t know why they were doing knacking at a very young age. They were very young so they didn’t know what they were doing,” he said.
“When they had me they were like ‘Let’s go and see your grandma’ Then they dropped me with her and ran away because they were too young and didn’t know what to do with me.
“I don’t think my mother was up to 20 years old when she had me and my dad was probably in his early 20’s. They were childhood sweethearts, then they left each other and he went back to Ghana.”
