Nigerian self-proclaimed online police, Martina Vincent Otse, aka Verydarkman (VDM), has weighed in on the House of Representatives’ move to ban porn sites, questioned its relevance in a country battling deeper crises.

The motion, sponsored by Member representing the Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal constituency, Dalhatu Tafoki, was framed as a move to protect societal values.

Tafoki said in parts;

“I would like to move a motion for the need to block internet websites hosting pornographic content and sanction the internet service providers responsible for the posting. The House notes that cyber pornography is fast becoming a global problem, and no concrete steps have been taken to cut its phenomenon in Nigeria.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings that there are psychological and sociological consequences for creating ponographic content.

“The immediate effects of doing ponographic content include a. promotion of adultery, prostitution, and other promiscuous behaviours, leading to addiction, escalation, and desensitisation, change of attitude towards oneself and family.”

VDM, taken aback by the directive, wondered why pornography had become a legislative priority while insecurity, unemployment, and economic struggles remained unresolved.

He argued that joblessness, not adult content, is the real issue people turn to distractions when they have no means of survival.

He pointed out the futility of the ban, noted that addicts will easily bypass restrictions using VPNs or turn to platforms like Twitter, where explicit content remains rampant.

Calling for a shift in focus, Verydarkman urged lawmakers to tackle the root causes of societal decay rather than attempting to censor symptoms.
