Ayra Starr makes history as first African female artist to hit 5 million Spotify followers

Famous Nigerian singer Oyinkansola Aderibigbe popularly known as Ayra Starr is in her “Sabi Girl” era, and the numbers are backing it up!

The Nigerian music sensation just became the first African female artist to hit 5 million followers on Spotify. This is a major milestone that cements her as one of the continent’s most influential streaming powerhouses.

While she’s no stranger to breaking records and topping charts, this latest feat puts her in a league of her own when it comes to actual followers on the global platform.

However, the Sabi Girl trails Tems who currently leads in total Spotify streams. Ayra currently boasts 2.7 billion total streams across all credits, while Tems holds a solid 3.8 billion.

Still, Ayra is not far behind, and she’s clearly catching up fast. Her most streamed song overall on Spotify is the sultry, addictive Santa, which has racked up over 707 million streams (and counting). Meanwhile, in February, Spotify crowned Ayra Starr, as the leading artiste in its Global Impact List for the year 2025.

The digital music service made the disclosure in a statement, unveiling Ayra Starr’s dominance on the  Impact List by leading 30 Nigerian songs.

The top 10 list includes Ayra Starr, Rauw Alejandro, and Rvssian’s “Santa”; Tems’s “Love Me JeJe”; Burna Boy, Coldplay, Elyanna, Little Simz, and TINI’s “WE PRAY”; and more.

Other songs featured are Ayra Starr and Giveon’s “Last Heartbreak Song”; 21Savage, Burna Boy, and Metro Boomin’s “Justlike Me”; Tems and Tyla’s “No.1”; and others.

The list showcases 30 Nigerian songs with the strongest international connections this year, reflecting Nigeria’s growing global influence.

The statement highlighted Nigerian artistes breaking boundaries, saying Spotify is proud to amplify their global reach.

Ayra Starr was also Nigeria’s most-streamed female artiste in 2024.
