Authorities discovered their bodies in separate rooms, with no immediate signs of trauma or foul play.
According to Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza, an associate of the couple alerted emergency services after making the grim discovery.
While officials have not ruled out any possibilities, no suicide note was found. One of their three dogs was also found dead inside a kennel, while two surviving dogs remained at the residence.
Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, suspects that carbon monoxide poisoning may have been the cause of death.
She told TMZ that the family believes hazardous vapors were involved, though the official cause remains undetermined.
Gene Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner who turned 95 in January, retired from acting in 2004 and led a private life in New Mexico.
