In the wake of his statement, online speculation has surged suggesting that KWAM 1 may be under consideration for the Awujale throne. One commentator on Facebook wrote:

“If K1 is to contest the sit of Awujale, that’s unarguably the end of his long years of Fuji music career… again if he becomes Awujale, expect more gbasgbos of greetings with other Yoruba Obas at Social functions… Interesting days ahead as all Ijebu prince will join the race.”

No formal confirmation has yet been issued, and the tradition of selecting a new Awujale remains strictly regulated by Ijebu kingmakers and ruling houses, with no public indications that any official process has begun.

The late monarch reigned for 64 years, earning recognition as one of the most enduring traditional rulers in Nigeria.

KWAM 1’s royal standing is well-established. In July 2023, the late Oba Adetona conferred on him the chieftaincy title “Olori Omo Oba Akile Ijebu”, positioning him as the head of Ijebu royalty.

This title, previously held by the late Otunba Subomi Balogun, elevated the musician’s cultural status beyond entertainment. The artist also underwent a customary seven-day seclusion rite and emerged in ceremonial white and leopard skin attire as palace tradition demands.

Added to that, KWAM 1 was earlier installed as Mayegun of Yorubaland by the late Alaafin of Oyo in 2020, further bolstering his influence among Yoruba cultural elites.

At present, Ijebu-Ode is preparing for the burial of Oba Adetona, scheduled to take place at Ogbagba Court in Ijebu Odé. Meanwhile, comments and conversations around the potential of KWAM 1’s future traditional role continue to drum louder—though none are confirmed by palace authorities.
