May Edochie’s former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, has made startling revelations about the ongoing co-parenting financial arrangements between Nollywood actor Yul Edochie and his estranged wife, stirred intense online reactions and fresh scrutiny of her growing brand.
Speaking in a detailed breakdown via Facebook on Thursday, August 7, Emeka confirmed that Yul Edochie initially stopped providing financial support for the children after the marital fallout. However, he later resumed partial contributions, though not up to the amount May had originally requested.
Emeka clarified that while Yul isn’t paying the full amount demanded, he is contributing between 50% and 70%—sometimes late, but consistently.
A major point of contention, according to Emeka, was the change of the children’s schools. He stated that May enrolled the children in new schools with higher fees without Yul’s prior approval, which prompted Yul to insist on continuing to pay the fees of their former schools instead. Despite this dispute, Emeka disclosed that both parties eventually signed a financial agreement that May accepted.
More importantly, the lawyer revealed that both parties have since signed a mutual agreement settling the financial terms. As long as Yul honors the agreed figure, there is no longer a legal dispute on the issue.
He also warned that the public outcry often fueled by “May Nation”—her online supporters—could backfire. Emeka claims May’s silence amid misinformation about Yul and Judy Austin is inadvertently tying her brand’s success to public sympathy and the demonization of her ex-husband. This, he says, is a dangerous path that could cost her sponsorships if the narrative shifts.
Here is the full quoted statement from May Edochie’s former lawyer, Emeka:
“Yul started contributing support after he initially stopped. He is not paying 100% of what May demanded. He insisted on paying a figure less than was demanded. He complained that the children’s schools were changed to schools with higher fees without his consent. So, he refused to pay the new school fees, insisting on paying the old school fees. On the other hand, May had a good reason to change the schools.
“It is quite normal for parents to have this kind of disagreement. I have never seen a man who paid exactly the amount the woman demanded. There is always a compromise somewhere. So, there is nothing unusual in this case. I think Yul is paying more than 50 – 70% of what was demanded. He may be late sometimes, but he is paying.
“Well, it doesn’t really matter now because they eventually signed an agreement on the matter. May accepted the figures Yul agreed to pay and if he keeps paying them, they are good. It is May Nation that is creating all manner of sensation and fiction. And May keeps quiet because the sensational stories are generating the sympathy that drives up her brand. This is a mistake. Her brand may suffer a decline when the truth finally comes out.
“I knew this. That was why I wanted to direct her supporters toward the brand promotion and away from their hatred of Yul and Judy. They did not realize that one day, the mood of the people may swing in favour of Yul. It will take one single mistake by May to turn her gullible supporters away. She needed to break the link between her brand development and the popular hatred of Yul and Judy. If you don’t understand this, you are not intelligent.
“Much of the hostility toward Yul is based on misinformation. It is risky to build anything based on misinformation. Even her sponsors will withdraw if they realize the level of misinformation that drove her growth. Anybody can suddenly lose sponsors. If it could happen to Yul, it can happen to anybody. So, you have to be careful. May needs good professionals to manage her. Otherwise, she will have serious problems.”
