Barbara Windsor's widower Scott Mitchell reveals a memorial event will be held for her next year

Barbara Windsor’s widower Scott Mitchell has confirmed a memorial event is being planned for her next year.

The EastEnders actress died in December 2020 aged 83 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and only 30 people were allowed to attend her funeral in January due to Covid restrictions at the time.

Speaking to The Mirror, Scott confirmed a bigger event is being planned for 2022 so friends and family of the star, who played Peggy Mitchell on the soap, can celebrate her life.

He said: ‘I’m definitely getting something together for next year. I have to give myself time – it’s only been nine months since she passed. I’m still processing it.

‘But there will be something next year. We’ll make sure all her friends who couldn’t be at the funeral can get together and remember her.’

Scott marked what would have been Barbara’s 84th birthday last month by unveiling a plaque in her honour.

He said: ‘I was always going to be a difficult day – I just wanted to do the best I could and do something for Barbara and let her know she was in my thoughts.’

Barbara’s on-screen son Ross Kemp, who plays Phil Mitchell on EastEnders, read a eulogy at her funeral.

The actor told the publication it took him three days to craft the speech and he said he still keeps a photo of her in his office taken when she was in her twenties.

Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014 and kept her fight with the illness private for four years.

After her death, Scott told PA: ‘Her passing was from Alzheimer’s/dementia and Barbara eventually died peacefully and I spent the last seven days by her side.

‘Myself, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, a smile and affection for the many years of her love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives and the entertainment she gave to so many thousands of others during her career.

‘Barbara’s final weeks were typical of how she lived her life. Full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end.’
