Soap fans were given a surprise after rewatching the Christmas classic – which stars the likes of Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy and Colin Firth – and spotting the actor.

Tragic scenes marking the end of Super Soap Week in October saw Johnny, portrayed by Richard Hawley, hear his dead son Aidan call out ‘dad’, before he finally surrendered to the cold and drowned.

In the episode, Johnny and Jenny found themselves trapped in a sinkhole as torrential weather hit the cobbles, with the ordeal seeing him confess his love to her.

He also apologised for his past mistakes before helping her escape.

The pair were fearful they would die together, before Shona Ramsey saved the day by throwing them a rope.

A selfless Johnny was adamant that Jenny be pulled through first as Shona wouldn’t be able to pull both of them simultaneously.

Once reaching a place of safety, the women tried to call out to Johnny but to no avail – he died as he heard his son’s voice for the last time.

Johnny’s son Aidan – played by Shayne Ward – died by suicide three years earlier, resulting in his dad lashing out on Jenny and cheating on her with Liz McDonald.

Of that life changing moment, Johnny explained: ‘After that, my life stopped, nothing made sense.

‘Everything’s been all wrong, you know, I tried,’ to which Jenny replied: ‘No, because that sounds like you’re giving up and you’re not allowed to give up.’

After his character was killed off, he appeared on Loose Women to talk about his future career plans, revealing he wants to train as a forest school volunteer.

He said: ‘Firstly, I’m going to train and volunteer in a forest school nearby where I live. I did a bit of work in one and they’re just fantastic places for kids.’

And speaking about his decision to leave the show, Richard said travelling to Manchester from Brighton, where he lives, was getting ‘difficult’.

He said: ‘I had always wanted to do what was a really great love story and to be perfectly honest, if you want to do a really great love story, somebody has to die.

‘It has to be over. And that’s what we wanted. That’s why I stepped up, really and said I was ready to go.’
