Ed Sheeran treats fans to selfies as he leaves his hotel in New York

Ed Sheeran was ever the gracious star when he took a moment out from his day to snap some selfies with adoring fans.

The 30-year-old singer–songwriter paused as he was leaving his hotel in New York City on Wednesday following his performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

The outing comes a day after he complained that American awards shows are ‘filled with resentment and hatred.’

Ed looked relaxed and casual as he left the hotel and headed out to a black SUV waiting at the curb.

He was covered up in an indigo Louis Vuitton zip-up hoodie, which he wore with black cargo pants.

The Shape Of You singer had his sleeve pulled up to show off his luxury wristwatch, and he added a splash of color with red-and-black Nikes.

Even though he seemed to be in good spirits and was happy to take a moment with fans, the musician appeared to have had a less-than-ideal time at the VMAs over the weekend.

While speaking with Audacy’s Julia Lepidi for The Julia Show Sheeran criticized American awards shows, claiming they’re filled with ‘hatred’ and have an ‘uncomfortable atmosphere.’

Two days prior to his striking comments he performed his new song Shivers from his upcoming album = (pronounced ‘Equals’) at MTV’s ceremony.

‘The room is filled with resentment and hatred towards everyone else and it’s quite an uncomfortable atmosphere,’ he complained.

The Castle on the Hill hitmaker was nominated for four awards at the show but failed to win any.

According to him, it’s not the artists and musicians who create the toxic atmosphere, but those on their management teams.

‘All the artists are sweet people, but they’re like, surrounded by entourages that want them to win too, so it’s one artist surrounded by ten people and another artist surrounded by ten people and everyone is kind of giving each other the side-eye.’

The multi-million selling pop star was also quick to note that the ‘horrible atmosphere’ is a trend mostly exclusive to American awards shows, as opposed to those in his native UK.

‘It’s nothing to do with MTV or the show, it’s at all the other awards shows [too]. Billboards, Grammys, AMAs,’ he explained. ‘It’s just lots of people wanting other people to fail and I don’t like that.

He described award shows across the pond as more congenial and care free.

‘In England, our awards shows are just like everyone gets drunk and no one really cares who wins or loses. It’s just sort of a good night out.’

He added that the bad vibes can follow attendees out of the venues and into the opulent after-parties.

Good time: He claimed the mood was lighter at UK-based award shows. 'In England, our awards shows are just like everyone gets drunk and no one really cares who wins or loses. It’s just sort of a good night out'

‘The after-parties, again… it’s not just musicians. It’s musicians, all their entourages, then you got influencers and blah blah blah.’

Ed rounded off his comments by claiming he’s not alone in having negative feelings about US award shows.

‘People get the same feeling as me at those award shows,’ he said.

‘I’ve spoke to people and they’re like, “I just felt really depressed afterward.” The atmosphere is just not nice. It’s a really, really horrible atmosphere to be in there. I always walk away feeling sad and I don’t like it.’

Sheeran’s fourth studio album Equals will be released on October 29.
