James Buckley says 'there's not enough money in the world' that would convince him to play Jay again

James Buckley has admitted that ‘there’s not enough money in the world’ that could convince him to reprise his role in the Inbetweeners.

The actor, 34, played the iconic role of Jay Cartwright for three series and two movies opposite Simon Bird (Will Mckenzie), Joe Thomas (Simon Cooper), and Blake Harrison (Neil Sutherland).

Despite confessing that the role was ‘the best job in the world’ and that he knew he would have an ‘amazing time’ he revealed he would not be interested in making a comeback.

During an appearance on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, Chris asked James what he would say if the people who wrote Inbetweeners came to him with a new script for the show.

James replied: ‘No. I don’t want to go near it anymore.’

He went on to explain: ‘Not because I don’t think I would have an amazing time doing it, because I know I would. I love the boys, I love the writers.

‘Doing The Inbetweeners was the best job in the world. All we did was muck around all day long and they filmed us doing it, and at the end of the day, we might have had an episode, or a TV, you know, or a film or something. It was the best job in the world.

‘But it might – you know, as I’m getting older – it’s looking like it might be the only thing that I do professionally that is universally loved. There’s not enough money in the world for me to spoil that.’

The pair also discussed James’ use of the celebrity video app Cameo, in which he often poses as the famous character.

Chris said: ‘I think you’ll work for a long, long time, but you’ll always be Jay from The Inbetweeners. You’ll never escape it, and that’s your doom. But what I like is, you turned that doom into doing video messages on Cameo, which I’d imagine 95% of them are Jay.’

James replied saying: ‘I’d say higher than that! […] But listen, this is the thing, right. So, as you say, Jay from The Inbetweeners, people still really like that character.

‘You know, you can either go two ways with that. You can sit there and sort of go “oh, that’s not me, I’d like to move on and do other things now'” or you can sit there and go “you know, I quite liked doing it and I thought it was fun at the time, and people seem to still enjoy it.”

‘And yeah, listen, as an actor, it’s difficult professionally for me to move away from that character. But you can’t have it all, can you? You can’t be in a big hit sitcom, and then moan about it after!

‘But listen, I still like The Inbetweeners, I still love Jay, and, you know, I won’t say what I say in these Cameo videos…’
