Tom Hardy stunned viewers when his character returned from the dead in the fifth series in 2019.

But fans of Peaky Blinders spotted a major mistake in the latest episode as Alfie Solomons described killing Italian soldiers with a bayonet during World War I.

The Jewish gangster made a spectacular return to the hit BBC show on Sunday night as Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) headed to see Alfie after his meeting with Orlagh McKee (Charlene McKenna).

Alfie is the former-foe-turned-sort-of-friend who Tommy shot in the face at the end of season four then returned at the end of season five to help the Peaky Blinders bring down Mosley.

As Tommy makes a grand entrance, Alfie describes opera as ‘just fat people f***ing shouting’.

Tommy asks ‘What do you think now?’, with Alfie responding ‘I think the sound of a tenor in full passion reminds me of crying out Italian soldiers when they have my bayonet inside them.’

One user commented: ‘Anyone notice Tom Hardy’s character Alfie Solomon in tonight’s Peaky Blinders talk about Italian Soldiers with his bayonet in them? Really bad research by the script writer?’

Another said: ‘Solomon stating he killed Italian soldiers in WW1 is wrong. In WW1 the Italians were on the Allied side.’

A third added: ‘This is the second time Alfie has referenced killing an Italian in the war. Italy were on our side, who did Alfie fight for???’

The latest episode also revealed Alfie’s uncle, Charles Solomons, has been shot dead in Boston and the family has lost any control that they had over the city.

Tommy offers to sell his opium to the Jewish gangsters of Boston, which would reverse the power shift they so desperately want. ‘In the final act that I’m giving you, Alfie, it is you that takes the revenge,’ Tommy says, trying to tempt Solomons into action.

In exchange he wants Solomons’ Camden property empire so that he can build houses for the ‘needy and the deserving’.

This sets up a problem: Tommy is playing both sides and is seemingly planning to sell his opium to both the Solomons and Nelson’s gang.
