Strictly star Johannes Radebe seeks comfort in dance partner John Whaite after BAFTAs

Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe made a bleary-eyed exit from Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards.

The popular pro dancer was pictured being consoled by his partner on the 2021 series of the show, John Whaite as they waited for a bus home from London‘s Royal Festival Hall where the annual awards ceremony was held.

An emotional looking Johannes shared a friendly hug with the Bake Off star after their glitzy night out.

John, who has been in a relationship with graphic designer fiancé Paul Atkins since 2008, sweetly consoled his friend.

After waiting awhile for a bus that didn’t appear, the two jumped in a taxi with some pals.

The pair missed out on a BAFTA after Strictly lost on the Entertainment Programme category to Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

Johannes opened up about his love life in a recent interview, candidly admitting he has been ‘very lonely the last couple of years.’

The dancer said he has ‘dedicated his life to dancing’ but would ‘welcome’ the opportunity of a relationship if it arose.

Speaking to The Mirror, the 34-year-old said: ‘I honestly don’t know when I was last in a relationship. It’s been a while, a few years. I’ve been too busy. I’ve dedicated my life to dancing.

‘So there’s been no time for a relationship. I live on my own and I’ve been very lonely the last couple of years. I’ve been working and I haven’t had time to socialise.’

The dancer, who hails from South Africa, prefers more traditional means of meeting people and said that dating via apps and websites ‘doesn’t work.’

Johannes also touched on the difficulties of dating as a public figure but is optimistic about meeting someone ‘at face value’ and getting to know them.

Having children is also on the BBC star’s radar and he deems himself to be ‘at that age.’

He said: ‘It would be beautiful to have children one day. But it’s a responsibility I’d like to share. To go about that you need a partner and a strong relationship. But I feel like I’m at that age.’

Johannes and Great British Bake Off Winner John, 32, spun their way to the Strictly Come Dancing final last year, serving as gracious runners-up to Rose-Ayling Ellis and Giovanni Pernice.

Johannes, who moved to the UK in 2018 after being called up for the dancing competition, said it was ‘very courageous’ of the BBC to introduce an all-male couple, adding that it meant a ‘great deal’ to him as it represented ‘everything I was.’

It wasn’t until three years ago that the choreographer finally raised his sexuality with his mother, who responded to his coming out with, ‘You are my son and nothing changes.’

But other reactions to his being gay have not been so supportive, as he admitted to avoiding social media owing to cruel messages such as ‘Don’t come back to Africa, you’re a disgrace’.

Johannes is giving an insight into his life with his solo UK dance tour Johannes Radebe: Freedom.
