The ARIAs go gender-neutral to cater to nonbinary artists

The ARIA Awards is making efforts to be more inclusive when it returns this year.

For the first time in history, Australia’s biggest music awards show will merge the Best Male and Best Female Artist categories into one in an effort to include non-binary performers.

ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd told the Herald Sun: ‘The time for separating artists based on gendered categories that exclude non-binary artists altogether has passed.’

Herd explained that the ARIAs want to promote equality with the new measures, because more and more artists these days are gender non-conforming.

‘There are artists, including artists who have charted at No. 1 in the past year, who ’t identify as male or female,’ Herd said.

The category will now include ten instead of the usual five, in order to cater to men, women, and non-binary.

Some of Australia’s most prominent non-binary artists include multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana, singer G Flip, and genderfluid drag queen Courtney Act.

G Flip publicly came out as non-binary in a powerful Instagram post back in June.

‘I’m non-binary mother f***ers! Big props to those who have been educating and advocating for the ENBY community the last few years,’ the singer wrote.

‘Looking into what it means to be non-binary had me realise that that’s who I’ve been my entire life. Gonna use they/them pronouns from now on too.’

‘I’m still the exact same person, non-binary is just the best way to explain who I am and how I’ve always felt, like a gender smoothie.’

The 2021 ARIA Music Awards will be streamed live on YouTube on 24,
