Companies, workers can appeal tax burden

A tax firm, Ultimate Tax Relief, Lagos, has said taxpayers have the right to appeal and protest tax burdens placed on them by any authority.

Speaking to The PUNCH in an interview, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Habeeb Fasuyi, maintained that there were a lot of grey areas in tax laws that were not direct and might be interpreted wrongly.

“Taxpayers should know they have rights. They can protest, and appeal whatever tax burdens the tax authority is putting on them. It is not in all cases that the government is right when you receive a tax bill.

“Taxpayers need a tax consultant who understands the law, who can fight for their interests,” he said.

He explained that UTR would assist taxpayers to resolve, advocate and navigate tax liabilities.

Habeeb said, “We want to help taxpayers to resolve their tax problems, advocate for those that are in problems, help them navigate from the problems to be able to save their business from tax liabilities.

“Some of the tax problems we are looking forward to helping clients resolve are high burden tax, situations whereby you see that the tax authority is overreaching and giving unnecessary burden to the taxpayer, and we want to ensure the taxpayer does not pay more than what he or he and the company is legally required to pay.”

He added that there were instances when taxpayers were not aware that there are some taxes they are not supposed to pay but they end up paying.
