Oil workers protest over unpaid salaries

Workers of Mormar Marine staged a peaceful protest in Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State, demanding the immediate payment of six months’ salary arrears allegedly owed them by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited/Heritage Energy.

The firm, which is a contracting firm to the NPDC, Heritage and Shoreline, secures oil facilities from the activities of vandals in OML 30. They protested on Thursday.

One of the coordinators of the protesting workers, Tennyson Oriunu, while addressing journalists, lamented the agony workers had been passing through following the non-payment of their salaries by the oil firms.

He said, “We are the people securing the oil facilities from being vandalised and from infractions, but since the last six months we have not been paid our salaries.  Even at Christmas, nothing came.

“The reason why all the workers gathered here today is to register their grievances of not being paid their six months salaries.”

While noting that it is a peaceful protest and the first step being taken to intimate the companies involved of their pains, he however warned that failure by the company’s management to listen and meet their demands would lead to drastic actions that might not benefit the oil firms.
