For #SavorTheCulture, a Brooklyn plantain destination is featured by our resident experts in delightful delectables.
NewsOne’s Deveen Taylor and BOSSIP’s Char Masona are walking us through BunNan BK, a Flatbush establishment helmed by Nadege Fleurimond who serves plantains in a number of creative ways.
BunNan BK offers plantain sandwiches that vary from jerk to red snapper, as well as plantain fries, plantain boats, and plantain nachos.
Fleurimond who’s a proud plantain enthusiast, says her restaurant pays homage to her Haitian heritage all while elevating plantains from just a side dish to the main course.
“I was tired of plantains being a side dish,” she says before raving about how plantains are loved across numerous cultures including African, Carribean and Latin American. “So I wanted something that would connect everyone and show how similar we are as it relates to food.”
Throughout the episode, our hosts have an ongoing debate about the pronunciation of the dish but luckily for us, Fleurimond is around to settle it once and for all.
Are plantains pronounced “plan-TAIN” or “plan-TIN,” asks Deveen.
“It’s plan-TIN,” says Chef Fluerimond about the proper pronunciation. “Do we say mountain or moun-tane?” she adds.
Very valid point!
