Customs intercept smuggled donkey hides, others

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Units Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos has disclosed that it intercepted 730 sacks of donkey hides and other contraband worth N1.2bn in October.

Addressing journalists at the command on Tuesday, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Hussein Ejibunnu, said that the animal skin concealed in a 40-foot container, which was intercepted at Onigari area of Ibadan, Oyo State, was coming from Kaduna.

“Other contraband intercepted within the period under review included 14,825 litres of premium motor spirit equivalent to 593 jerrycans; 657 pieces of used tires; 167 parcels of Indian hemp; 39 bales of used clothing and 100 packs of tomato ketchup,” he said.

According to Ejibunnu, other items seized were four units of used motorcycles, 600 cartons of CIV soap and 7,381 bags of foreign rice.

He further stated during the period under review, N115m was recovered through the issuance of demand notices from defaulters from undervaluation, underpayment, and wrong classification.

He averred that 17 vehicles were recovered from the smugglers and nine suspects were arrested in connection with the various seizures.
