OAU campus agog as 200-level student begins 50-hour hand wash-a-thon to set new Guinness world record

Subair Enitan, a 200-level student at the Obafemi Awolowo Un iversity (OAU), has plunged into a marathon of cleanliness—a 50-hour hand wash-a-thon—with the aim of etching her name into the illustrious pages of the Guinness World Records (GWR).

The student, who is in the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, began the attempt on Friday, November 24, at the Sub Car Park, inside the school campus.

Online videos surfaced, capturing the spirited cheers of both students and staff from the institution, rallying behind Enitan as she surpassed the six-hour mark in her attempt.

Commencing her task in the afternoon, Enitan conveyed a sense of optimism, foreseeing a resilient finish that would proclaim her the title holder of the longest hand-washing marathon.

“My background, the lessons life taught me have been motivating me to embark on this wash-a-thon. My experience is unexplainable but it taught me to be selfless,” she had said.

“I am confident that I will reach the set goal of 50 hours of hand wash and by God’s grace I will emerge victorious.

“Despite the massive support from my colleagues here, I pray for the grace of God to be able to complete the task. My parents are very supportive and I urge Nigerians to rally round me while I work towards completing the task.”

It is believed that the student notified the prestigious British reference book of her intentions in June this year.

She was also said to have been given November 24, to embark on her attempt.

The Student Union President, Abbas Akinremi-Ojo disclosed that needed supports including ambulance, lighting, water among other logistics have been put in place to ensure she win the challenge.

The management of OAU through the Dean, Students Affairs, Professor John Odedire said the school is ready to give all it takes to ensure she clinches the record.
