Social media was thrown into a frenzy recently after a clip of Oyemykke surfaced online, where he reacted to claims that the Abobaku of the late Awujale of Ijebuland allegedly attempted to flee instead of fulfilling his traditional duty of being buried with the monarch.

The controversial personality didn’t hold back, calling the move cowardly and insisting that the man should bear his cross after enjoying life to the fullest.

After all the balling and flexing, this is the part you run from? You should’ve run during COVID, because that’s when people were dying” Oyemykke said, sparking outrage and laughter in equal measure.

But the comment didn’t sit well with many, including popular actor Sunkanmi Omobolanle, who quickly debunked the claim with a firm response:

“Stopet bro 😢 Ijebu no Dey do Abobaku 💔”

The debate exploded across Instagram, with fans, critics, and content creators all chiming in. While some found Oyemykke’s remarks hilarious, others slammed him for joking about a tradition that is not only controversial but allegedly abolished in Ijebuland years ago. Some users questioned whether the entire Abobaku tradition still applies in this era, especially since Oba Sikiru Adetona was buried according to Islamic rites. Others just saw the whole thing as pure comedy.

This Abobaku culture should be banished. It’s quite scary that it is still practised in 2025,” one user commented.
