The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has announced the indefinite suspension of Nollywood actress Shirley Igwe following allegations of violent behavior on a movie set in Lagos.
The suspension, which was confirmed in a public statement issued by AGN leadership, stems from a reported incident where the actress was accused of physically assaulting a crew member during production.
The Guild labeled her conduct as “unprofessional, violent, and indisciplined,” warning that such actions are capable of bringing the industry into disrepute.
The announcement was made via an official memo signed by Ifeoma Okeke, Chief of Staff to the AGN National President.
According to the statement, the Guild’s National Executive Council deliberated on the matter and found sufficient grounds to take disciplinary action against Igwe.
“Following our preliminary investigation into the alleged unprofessional misconduct of Ms. Shirley Igwe on a film set in Lagos, the National Executive Council has resolved to place her on indefinite suspension,” the memo read.
AGN also instructed all its members to cease working with Shirley Igwe pending further directives. The Guild emphasized that the sanction was taken to maintain professional ethics and ensure accountability within the Nigerian film industry.
The development has triggered widespread reactions across Nollywood, with many stakeholders applauding the Guild for taking a firm stance against on-set violence. Social media users have also shared mixed reactions, with some calling for a fair hearing while others demanded stronger industry enforcement to protect crew welfare.
Shirley Igwe, once known for her roles in soap operas and as a former Delta Soap beauty queen, has yet to issue a public statement in response to the suspension. It is unclear whether she plans to appeal the decision or pursue legal redress.
The AGN noted that a full disciplinary review would follow, and any further actions would depend on the findings. Until then, Igwe remains barred from participating in any AGN-sanctioned projects or collaborations.
