Jaywon blasts Billboard, says his hit ‘This Year’ outshines all on afrobeats list

Nigerian singer Jaywon has taken a bold swipe at Billboard after his 2012 anthem, This Year, was excluded from the platform’s newly released list of the Top 50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time.

The singer argued that This Year has enjoyed unmatched cultural relevance and viral longevity, claiming that both gospel and Afrobeats acts have borrowed heavily from the song’s unique sound and celebratory template for more than a decade.

On his X handle, Jaywon wrote:

“This Year by Jaywon had more viral moments and cultural impact than some tracks Billboard decided to rank. Trending since 2012 and still going strong. Tell me, who else has pulled that off? 🤷🏽‍♂️

Hate is inevitable. Year after year, both gospel and Afrobeats acts copy the same vibe, yet we remain unshaken. Cry harder… No song on that list has more cultural impact than #Thisyear by Jaywon!!”

The Billboard ranking placed 2Baba’s evergreen hit African Queen at number one, followed by Wizkid’s Ojuelegba, Flavour’s Nwa Baby, Rema’s global smash Calm Down, and CKay’s viral sensation Love Nwantiti in the top five.

But Jaywon insists his record deserves its flowers, stressing that no Afrobeats classic has shaped December festivities, crossover celebrations, and even church crossovers the way This Year has for over a decade.

Since its release, This Year has become a staple at weddings, New Year’s Eve events, concerts, and religious gatherings — a rare feat for any Afrobeats record.
